minoanmiss: Maiden holding a quince (Quince Maiden)

Over on [community profile] 1word1day the splendiferous [personal profile] med_cat posted about Hathos:

"Hathos is the attraction to something you really can't stand; it's the compulsion of revulsion."

The most succinct term I'd had to date to describe this unfortunate situation (regrettably common whilst perusing the Internet) was "bile fascination" from TV Tropes.

*contemplates why we succumb to it*

"Bile fascination"...an interesting way to put it

Re: definition, it was hyperlinked from a recent article, or a newsletter, in The Atlantic--can find it for you if you wish?

It was in their "Peacefield" newsletter about Superman. I forwarded it to your email.

Is this the same as "hate following"?

It seems to have something in common with schadenfreude, which is German for, literally, "malicious joy" - taking pleasure in seeing someone you dislike having an unpleasant time. ("His flight was cancelled? Couldn't happen to a more-deserving asshole.")

Seeing someone you don't like having an unpleasant experience is a sort of one-step-removed revenge. They made your life miserable - now life is making them miserable!

I've known couples whose entire relationship was based on mutual revulsion. It was revolting to everyone who saw it, of course. And it caused damage to all parties concerned.

I once read a story in which one of the characters says to someone who's trying to seduce her, "Come... make hate to me." Ugh.
