Put another way, the uncompromising punitive extremism around pregnancy, childbirth, and miscarriage that we have seen rolled out in the states in the wake of Dobbs is either headed for an absolutely gobsmacking reality check in the 2022 midterms—an all-out drubbing that will conclusively prove that women have supersized voting power that cannot be suppressed or ignored. Or—and this is what the relatively tiny forced-birth faction is betting on—by the 2022 midterms, majority electoral blowouts won’t actually matter because the election deniers and the religious zealots will have engineered it that way.

Who here is unsurprised?

They're already crying "Election fraud!" in Kansas, after voters in that state defeated an anti-abortion amendment to the state constitution.

Aye! When women vote, it's fraud.

These people would like to be back to the days when we couldn't. Think it couldn't happen? I'm old enough to remember when I couldn't have a mortgage in my own name- some man would have had to sign for me.

Similarly, it was 1974 when the US revised their credit reporting laws to allow women to have credit reports in their own name.

What I don't get is that the last two elections have demonstrated that white women essentially vote the same way their white husbands do. So I don't think it will affect the overall results. It's cruelty that doesn't even advantage them.

It lets them be cruel to people they see as their lessers. A trade-off they're willing to make in numbers that are appallingly high to my eyes.

I'm a white woman with a white husband. There have been elections where his vote and mine canceled each other out.

Mori: Well, I mean. Yeah. Did people really think they'd just go, "Hooray, we got it! Welp, time to pack it in, we got everything we wanted"? It's an extremist minority who are clearly basing their stances on religious and ideological extremism, not pragmatism; why would they stop here? People didn't actually BELIEVE it was about "letting states decide," did they?

It always seemed obvious to me that the endgame was to declare all abortion illegal in the country. It's why I can't trust that our state will hold out; this is clearly not about democracy or what the majority of people want. The only reason we haven't gotten sterilized yet is because of a combo of choice paralysis, surgery phobia, and Rogan being too crack-brained to withstand a traumatic surgery at the moment. Hopefully we will not regret our impairment.

EDIT: also, can I just say how SURREAL it is to see all this drumbeating for personhood for fetuses when in plural circles, it's still an uphill slog? It feels like a topic we've spent years studying, only to have a bunch of religious nutjobs wade in with no knowledge whatsoever? It makes me want to laugh. Man, if that embryo in us was a person, then I want to take it to court for almost getting us murdered! If that embryo is a person, it's guilty of reckless endangerment, the little shit!

Too bad even if I win, I can't get damages; the little fucker didn't own a red cent...

I just finished reading a really helpful and distressing book by Michele Goodwin, Policing the Womb: Invisible Women and the Criminalization of Motherhood, which came out in 2020. The prose is merely workmanly, but the content-- yowza. She makes a very thorough case for wholesale reproductive justice, with abortion right merely parts of it.

As part of my ministry I am commonplace-booking it on Facebook. I only began a bit ago, and I keep anticipating Complaints. But maybe not: on Facebook people are capable of ignoring me even when I've *sullied* their *reading Pages*.
