Even though we knew this day was coming, it's still very sad. Still, a life well lived is a beautiful thing, and Ms. Nichols did so very much with her life, not just in the performing arts but also as a NASA recruiter. The number of people she inspired is huge, and the effect she had was profound, especially -- but not exclusively -- on women and people of color.

Thank you, Ms. Nichols, for making the world a better place through your actions and your example. We should all be so lucky as to have an effect on the world as excellent as your own.

I'm absolutely gutted.

Her very existence made it okay for a girl like me to be into sci-fi. I can only imagine what her effect was on so many Black girls.

She was an icon and a legend.

She was the guest of honor at the very first Star Trek convention I ever went to (1987/1988ish), and I was instantly in love with her humor and beautiful way of telling stories. I had my first every camera and I was surprised later to find that I had a whole roll of film of almost exactly the same picture because every time she said something particularly clever, I would take a picture.

She was a deeply kind person who touched people's lives - especially black people's lives - especially black women's lives - so deeply. No one can take that impact away, even as she will be very much missed.

Three siamese cats and a few tiger tabbies sat by the rainbow bridge waiting when she arrived and she saw all the stars in the pictures the Webb telescope sent this month shining brght in their eyes. What a reunion it was! If you can find a very quiet spot, you just might hear their purrs. <3 *hugs*
