I am in a lot of pain today. I'm not sure why. I bailed on work and got some more sleep before my scheduled appt today.

I need to go back to Stoneham and punch the dismissive doctor. He put in his note that he thinks I have Shingles. COULD HE HAVE TOLD ME THAT WHILE SHOVING ME OUT THE DOOR?!!?! at least I expressed this in a way that C the Awesome PA knew I wasn't mad at her and cracked up laughing.

Anyway, I'm on big fat gabapentins for the near future. I told C she has been the most useful medical professional I've seen in this whole mess and she sounded really touched.

I collapsed* on the train and spent 2 hours sound asleep. Thank goodness I left my earrings at home. Ugh.

*: as in propped myself in a corner with my purse wedged into my waist, not as in fell down in the aisle

Tomorrow if I am alive I have to go to work.

I hope that you don't have negative side effects. Do pay close attention while taking the medication. (I'm not a doctor or nurse, so I'm trying not to suggest anything specific.)

Don't worry overmuch; I was on gabapentin for more than a year. The side effect that slayed me was worth dealing with if it had done its job-- I could only taste salt and sugar. Really. For someone who loves to cook and in fact has food=love engraved in my DNA, it was terrible, BUT worth results. In my case, it didn't help, so I stopped taking it and about a month later my taste buds were back to normal.

I could only taste salt and sugar.

I did not know that could happen, son of a buttered biscuit. Gabapentin is an as-needed med for me, either to help sleep or calmthefuckdown rightthefucknow. I distinctly remember some times when salt tasted so much better than usual. I should look for the correlation and plan for this.

I love to cook. I love good food. On principle. I haven't salted anything but the occasional potato in YEARS... So when I say that I was reaching for the salt just so there was some flavor at ALL, it's a bit of perspective.

I've had family members going through radiation and chemo cancer treatments who said that shingles was the most painful problem they were specifically having.

Meep, I certainly hope mine keeps getting better rather than worse! This isn't as bad as either the kidney stones or the worst clot expulsions, and definitely not as bad as getting beaten (but I was much younger then). It's probably most comparable to being beaten in that it lasts for hours at a time. Kind of wearying.

gridlore has said on multiple occasions that shingles was by far the most painful thing he ever had to deal with (including advanced chemotherapy).

Goodness. I can't say mine is that bad. It's a little like the aftermath of a beating, when I used to be sore for hours, but it's as much the duration as the intensity that's getting to me.

Everything is a learning experience.

At least there are treaments for shingles. I'm still trying to dress up boiled chicken. I thought I might have damaged my upper denture (that I had built for me a couple of years ago and I fell on my face and smashed all my teeth). I went to the dentist today, and he took an x-ray and my denture is fine, none of the implants were affected, and I got to tell him how my life turned into a knockabout comedy, covered with vomit, blood, and cracker crumbs. His technician was amused.

Be careful with gabapentin And congratulations on being able to sleep on the T.

May I strongly recommend leaving reviews of the incompetent doctor? In multiple places. It's an effot, but you shouldn't have had that experience, and neither should anyone else.
