minoanmiss: Minoan men carrying offerings in a procession (Offering Bearers)

(there is SO much grief to drown in and this is me trying to stave that off with foolishness)

Attention Everyone.

This is a toga:

Man in toga

It is an Ancient Roman piece of clothing. Note how voluminous it is.

Exomis (an asymmetrical Greek tunic)

This sexy little Ancient Greek number with its characteristic single bared titty is an exomis. Note how voluminous it is not.

Here's another example:

warrior wearing exomis

That is all.

Feh. DW doesn't allow YouTube embeds in comments?

Obligatory: https://youtu.be/y1Mk7idVfcA?t=18

"Exomis! Exomis! Exomis!" just doesn't have the same ring to it.

Like all people to ever take a Latin class, I swore a solemn oath never to confuse a Roman toga with a Greek-style tunic, which all my Latin teachers all agreed no Roman would ever be caught dead in.

So, is an exomis a type of tunic, or is it something else entirely?

And of course togas are entirely unsuitable to fight in. That was part of the *point*.

exomis

Thank you for this important PSA - I did not know this word! *g*

I love how much I learn everyday from just existing in fandom spaces made up of people with diverse interests and backgrounds. Ancient Roman and Greek cultures are so interesting!

Thank you. I knew what a toga is (and isn't), but I didn't know what that other garment was called.
