But I wanted to show it to you anyway. Drawn for Black History Month. Content advisory: nudity, aftermath of violence.



This year I learned (maybe I knew before and forgot) that enslaved women braided seeds into their hair, because they had been stripped of every other way to keep belongings, and in hope in the face of the most uncertain future. This is a major way that crops such as okra, watermelon, and rice reached the Americas.

So I decided to draw them. Due to many foolish choices I won't have time to finish this before the month ends, so I thought I'd post what I have so far.

What you have is striking...

I never knew about the seeds

I never realized that about the seeds Peanuts themselves are not seeds. I do know that some people from Eastern Europe soaked rags in their sourdough starter, or their yogurt starter, and sewed the rags into the clothes they wore on the boat.

What a beautiful image that is - two young women, finding themselves in an unthinkable situation, are helping each other in whatever way they can. Probably sharing what they brought, so it'll spread as far as possible when the boat lands.
