minoanmiss: Girl with beads in hair and stars in eyes (Star-Eyed Girl)

Is it just me, or are annoying actors less annoying when they act animated characters? Iago is entertaining where Gilbert Godfried is smush-worthy. Rocket Raccoon is the only role of Bradley Cooper's that reached me emotionally. I actually liked Megamind and I usually want to expunge Will Ferrell. Anyone else have this observation?

Also, there was a question floating around about something you were entertainingly wrong about as a kid. I've told you all about my parti-colored hair misapprehension, right? Until I was 10 I thought that "roots" (hair that's bleached until a certain distance from the scalp, where it turns brown) was yet another White hair variant like brown or red or blonde. Now every so often the idea makes me giggle.

Have you seen Stranger Than Fiction? Don't let the fact that Will Ferrell stars stop you -- it's a great film.

Co-signing this! (Though I like Will Ferrell in just about everything.) He's great, Queen Latifah and Emma Thompson have chemistry that ZINGS, and Maggie Gyllenhaal has never been lovelier. <3

Will Ferrell is usually annoying but his role as Mugatu in Zoolander perfectly leveraged his annoying bits.

I like Will Ferrell but I don't like many of his characters? (I know, I am always infinitely weird) but his character in zoolander (and all of zoolander really) is silly and fun. And I really hate movies that are like.. embarrassment humor and this never hits that.

I remember being amazed at how much I liked Zoolander. I had gone in very wary because embarassment humor isn't my thing either.

i did not like, and have pretty much forgotten all of zoolander, except for that one brilliant moment when the guy snaps and yells out "they're all the same look!!!"

1. Point.

2. Oh, lots and lots. I'm not good at remembering things by category, unfortunately. Ah, initially I could only think of odd misreadings-- associating Pride and Prejudice's "the company was at loo" with them somehow being small watercraft bobbing at a marina, and being able to make nothing of Elizabeth "suspecting them of playing high." And my utter failure to understand that Orwell's 1984 was comedic. (What can I say? I took adults Very Seriously, as they took themselves, and no one told me.) And in fact my concern over 19th century factory owners exercising jus primae noctis when none of the 19th century fiction I read hinted at that led meta learn from my father that this was a counterfactual promoted by Big Brother-- but I didn't realize I might connect that with the novel as a whole.

But a major concern of mine as a child was how intensely absorbing all the adults found the listing of what streets were under construction how. I found it so uninteresting! How could I ever manage adult life! I tried to read more of the newspaper then the comics, to train up, but tended to be drawn to advertisements for Evelyn West's Treasure Chest, to Ann Landers and Dr. Thostesen....

1984 was comedic? Ironic, satirical, sure, but not funny.

I did not understand it as ironic, or satirical. I now do find it sardonically funny.

I agree with [personal profile] misbegotten about Stranger Than Fiction. Incredible movie, in a similar way that The Secret Life of Walter Mitty made me see Ben Stiller in a different light. I still don't care for their comedy at all, but dang those two movies are good. (like minds on Zoolander tho, I watched it as a favor to a friend and didn't enjoy a single minute of it 😂)

1. I find the opposite—actors that I otherwise like are sometimes cringe when they're in animation. Bradley Cooper as Rocket Raccoon would be an exception, though.

2. That's adorable.

Okay, mine was that when I was a little kid, I went to hippie school and only went to a regular school in Grade 3. So I did not understand school culture at all.

Accordingly, I thought that "Spirit Week" had to do with summoning spirits, like with Ouija boards and such. I was very disappointed to learn otherwise.

When I was a kid, I knew too much about science to believe that hiding under my desk or leaning up against the lockers in the hallway would protect me from an atomic bomb hitting New York City (which was 40 miles away) - so I didn't take air raid drills very seriously. At least parading out of the building would keep us from burning to death if the building caught fire (so fire drills made sense).
