Today is the Holocaust Day of Remembrance.
Seventh Witness
I heard
a guard talking through the barbed wire
to a nine year old boy
You know a lot for a boy your age
he said
The boy answered
I know that I know a lot
and I also know
I’m not going to learn any more
He was loaded into a truck
with a group
of about 90 children
When the children started
screaming and struggling
the boy yelled
Get in here
Get in the truck
Stop your crying
You saw the way
your parents and grandparents
went
Climb in
then you’ll get to see them again
And as they were being driven off
I heard
him shout back to the guard
You won’t be forgiven
anything

Yom Hashoah, on the Hebrew calendar, falls during the period between Pesach (Passover) and Shavuot 50 days later. So usually in April, sometimes in early May.
International Holocaust Remembrance Day is a general observance as opposed to the one on the Jewish calendar. I don't know why these two dates were chosen or why whichever one came second chose not to align with whichever one came first.
But the important part is that people remember and reflect, and if there happen to be two different dates that prompt that, that seems ok.

Date: 2022-01-28 02:59 am (UTC)The International Day of Remembrance is commemorating the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, and was spearheaded by the UN. (And was begun in 2005, which is sort of startling to me in its lateness, but the UN has had a somewhat troubled relationship to Israel and things associated with Israel, at times.)
Yom Hashoah's first observance was instituted by the Chief Rabbinate, and is to honor the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising. (It was then made An Official Holiday by the Knesset.)
