Iam thinking an d Friday night Drunk which is a bad combination, so enjjoy this post before Soeber Saturday me deletes it.

The word Mercedes is really beautifl, ESPECIALLY when WD pronounces it. He makes this little amalgam of German and Spanish which sounds so gorgeous.

I suppose if we ever had hada daughter we could have named her Mercedes. but what would her nickname of been? Mercy? Dessie? I dunno.

I wish Dreamwidth had voice posts.

This post brought to you by watching a TV show where the host pronounces some words in an entirely different accesnt, which reminded me of how WD does and how awesome listening to that is, even/especioally as a sad monoglot.

If we'd named our kid Mercedes (or Portia) I guaran-damn-tee you people would be asking why we named her after a car.

Please drink some water and go to bed.

Love you.

I think Mercedes is a beautiful name, too.

There was a girl in one of my undergrad classes and her name was Chloda, and I think that is a beautiful name but Josh does not think so and so Fiona is not named Chloda.

Mercedes Lackey's nickname is Misty, author of the Valdemar series, among other works. (I met her at a con ages ago, ask me on one of my posts if you want me fangirl squeeing and babbling!)

She starts off her website with if you're looking for the cars, you want a different link. ;-) http://www.mercedeslackey.com I think.

I DID AND ALL CAPS WAS MY REACTION TOO, ESPECIALLY SINCE THE PRODUCERS ARE HIGH SCHOOL FANS OF MISTY'S WORKS. 😁😍

Back when we thought we'd adopt a daughter, we fancied the name "Felicity," but were concerned about the lack of nicknames. Whereupon we encountered a Yellowstone Hotel employee whose name tag said "Icy"....

I read a novel once wherein a Felicity nicknamed herself Lissy. Dunno how well it'd work in reality.

There's a character Mercedes in Carmen, so the name can be called traditional, i.e., older than the automobile. It does seem to derive from "mercy" from some Romance language source, and the sound is entirely appropriate to the meaning.

I remember learning that Mercedes could be a woman's name from Count of Monte Christo as a kid.

Hope Sober Saturday found you in good health.

Me, too!

And I started reading the book because of a local radio show called "Reading Aloud", which was, unsurprisingly, a guy reading books aloud, in 30-min chunks. Of course, I started listening partway through, so was a bit confused when the beginning was so different than I expected.

Which is all a long way of saying I heard the name before I saw it, so never thought of it as a car name.

Likewise like the name which I first saw in The Count of Monte Cristo. Also like Maximilian, same source.
