TL and WD were so right when they had me back up my computer. I don't know why replacing the battery included wiping the computer but there we are.

I need to recreate my bookmarks and my music mixes. I also need to go deal with work right now -- I got Slack installed to find PMs from Boss about Asshole Guy's Case. UGH.

*pats computer* More soon.

When we were there, Ian at the Genius Bar mentioned that they were likely going to replace the entire lower half of the machine, due to the damaged case and keyboard. The work order indicated that you had a backup of the machine, so they probably felt OK giving you a wiped hard drive. If you didn't have a backup they might have gone to a bit more effort to swap the data over.

You should have gotten that stuff back when you restored from backup. Not much of a backup if you don't.

She backed up data, but not a disk image.

If the stuff MM listed (bookmarks, iTunes playlists?) isn't "data", I don't know what is ...

This is mostly my fault, I should have asked some better questions about exactly what gets backed up, and should have suggested we do a test restore to make sure the expected things got backed up. There's a saying in the systems world that "If you don't do a test restore once in a while to verify that your backups actually work, then you don't really have backups."

But MM and I were unfortunately short on time, and hungry.

Yes, and if it weren't for the whole "never ask for loved one's password" thing I'd have simply done it for her and it would have been a Time Machine backup.

No shade @ either you or MM, but my millennial take on password sharing for tech help is more… “change your password to “ConsolationPasseord1!” and hand the machine over so i can do the thing” and then giving the device back.

(Subscriptions are fair game for password sharing. There’s a reason i use a different secure password for every account and it’s not to make account sharing safer/easier but that is a nice side benefit.)

There's a lot of hindsight on this one.

Oy! Best wishes with the restoration process. Thanks for the reminder to back up mine just before I take it in!
