Tol/Smol -- FUCK YES I so love size difference. I don't even know why.

Accidental Baby Acquisition -- Sure I liked it more when I was young (there was a book called _Baby Island_ I read the covers off of) and when the child has a personality I like it (frex, in Dira's Captain America stories with Teddy). But I don't tend to seek it out.

Ahahaha, IRL, YES! In fiction, I guess. I like the compliment for myself but get annoyed on behalf of my characters.

I never got that; I have never matched any conventional description of "beautiful", with or without my glasses. As my mother, who wore glasses all of her life, used to say, "Men never make passes at girls who wear glasses!" (Although my father always considered her beautiful.) The only people who ever spontaneously consider me beautiful are the sapiosexuals. (Where were they when I was 16?)

rather not -- this statement seems kind of bound up in unsavory ideas about transition and passing. I would read a story about someone experiencing and dealing with this sort of "praise", written by someone with experience with the matter, but I think it would be a bad idea to treat it as a straight up compliment, especially for an author without experience in the subject.

I am completely unsurprised you don't find it a compliment -- I was writing carefully before, but honestly it sounds awful. Like when people used to tell me how 'articulate' I am like it's a shock a Black girl could use multisyllabic words, that kind of utterly insulting 'compliment'. If I read a story with it used as a compliment I would cringe so hard. But a story that shows why it's not a compliment would be something else.

Precisely- it's like my coming from a working class background and people acting amazed when they realise there are six grad and postgrad uni quals attached to that working class girl.

It somehow spoils their comfy view of the world......... and that's before they know about the Romani and Jewish ancestry!

Sure -- back in my Star Trek AOS days there were a fair few Kirk/McCoy stories along these lines, but they mostly used the accidental marriage as a catalyst for dealing with Bones's Marriage Issues and/or getting them to fuck. I think I would rather read about the practicalities of accidental marriage, at least as I am now.

No -- I think LOTR is enough of that trope for me, with ST:DS9 as the cherry on top, and both because the stories flowed organically. When seemingly every other speculative fic novel is about this trope one can get fatigued by the high stakes. I would rather stories about people's lives, maybe their poleis or even their planet, but All of Existence is so big it doesn't make an impression anymore.
