I have read a number of scientific articles that explain how cats domesticated humans, several times throughout history, because of the mutual benefits of the arrangement (humans get to keep all the grain they harvest, without rodent by-products; cats get to live in the warmth of human homes, and have their pick of rodents. And both species get to cuddle with one another.

Interesting fact you probably know: The Ancient Egyptians often willed cats to one another upon their death. However, they didn't usually list the names in the wills. The first cat with a *known name* was called Nedjem, or, roughly, "Sweetie".
