I'd love to have your thoughts on - Day 11: What would make you leave a fandom, or prevent you from getting into it in the first place?

if that's not inspiring, how about - Day 16: Do you have a fandom that you follow - either regularly or casually - with little to no knowledge of canon?

Thank you for asking me interesting questions :D

1) I have not gotten into the _The Old Guard_ fandom because every time I venture beyond a carefully curated set of friends I find some kind of argument about racism raging like a tire fire.

2) I used to joke about how much I knew about SPN despite resolutely not watching a single damn episode.

re 1) - that's an excellent reason to avoid the fandom. maybe read the fic if it doesn't include problematic attitudes, but avoid people spouting awfulness, as people so sadly do very often

re 2) SPN was a juggernaut of a fandom - one couldn't really avoid it, without cutting all ties to fandom (and many non-fannish websites). your fannish osmosis knowledge is probably almost as thorough as some casual actual fans

My Minoans!

When I was young and Fundamentalist I was fascinated with archaeology, and researching X led me to Y led me to "The Pompeii of the Bronze Age Aegean" aka Thera, which led me to the Minoans on Crete. I was also fascinated with Greek Mythology and I loved correlating the two streams of knowledge.

I just fell in love with the Minoans' grace and beauty and [apparent] non-warlike nature. ANd no one seemed to know about them, so I started babbling about them, and when I needed a name for a new journal I picked them.

That is so interesting. I also grew up fundamentalist and was super into Greek mythology as a kid/teen. I would read Bullfinch's over and over.

I was fortunate enough to be given D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths with its luminous illustrations. And I so know what you mean. *wry smile*

I didn't have a copy, but I checked it out of the school library many times. Those illustrations. *swoons*

Does it count if I'm at the center of the collision? :D

I usually don't write or read that many crossovers, but in a challenge my assignee requested Martha Jones/Steve Rogers and I could SEE IT I could see both of them dealing with trauma and issues no one else ever had, see them connecting, seeing Steve with his thing for badass brunets. :D I'm still glad I wrote it.

Meanwhile there's a subfandom in the White Collar fandom where Neal is actually one of the former Robins. Someone would think I would be delighted (he's totally my fancast for Dick Grayson) but I actually find it kind of weird -- different fannish eras, I guess.

What about the Day 5 question! Earliest fannish obsession, and most recent.

My oldest fannish obsession? Either Ancient Grrek Mythology or Star Wars, depending. :D I also met LOTR that climactic year but I don't think I realized anyone else liked it, whereas with the other two I knew in my dim childlike way there was a 'fandom'.

My most recent one was the Sequel Trilogy, until TROS put a stake through its heart.

Day 14: What fandom broke your heart?

ahahhahahah. The Marvel Cinematic Universe had two Civil Wars and Tony Stark/his fandom won both of them. I lost an in real life friend, who told me I was an untrustworthy person because I wasn't Team Iron. I lost a bunch of online friens too, but I mean, I had been to this woman's house and cooked with her and now she thinks I'm a bad person. I read so many stories where I got to watch a Black man apologize to a White man for 'making' him shoot him, and saw my favorite characters called a thug and a fascist respectively, and was told in ten thousand posts and not a few arguments (which I inadviseably got into) that I hate people with PTSD, I support collateral damage, I like seeing people die, and I hate freedom. Over a movie.

I wrote a story about Clint's wife's reaction to the whole thing and people filled my inbox with comments that not only did she deserve to lose her children but that I am, in real life, a danger to children, for having written it.

I have had previous fandoms hurt me, definitely, but the MCU broke my little heart.

I'm sure it probably hurt and my sympathies but that was not a friend worth keeping.

I've never been in a megafandom (Pros and MFU were functionally tiny before I got onboard) and I've heard rumours of the insanity but that's bloody ridiculous!

I had a bad time in a small 'zealot' fandom years ago but still nothing to that extent.

Getting back into White Collar, but also... I seem to be braver, not least as a fanartist. Maybe I just feel that life's a little too short.
