I had a lovely [community profile] purimgifts this year.

Janice playing a guitar while she and Nyota sing

I drew this for What's On The Other Side? Muppets/Star Trek Original Series crossover, All Audiences. My recipient was [personal profile] elf and the other little stories I wrote were Barrayaran Roses Ekaterin & Cordelia from the Vorkosiverse, All Audiences, Gleaning The Fields Mozzie & June from White Collar, Teen, and At Least, Until Tomorrow, Peter/Elizabeth/Neal from White Collar, Mature .

Meanwhile I was given three splendid stories all about women: Meeting of the Minds, Sharon Carter & Peggy Carter, MCU, Teen, A Bonding Experience , Rose Tico and Rey from the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy, General Audiences , and Getting Used To Mortality, Nile and Andy, The Old Guard, Teen!

Thanks so much for the links. I really enjoyed your moment of Cordelia and the roses. And your June story with Moz was SPLENDID.

Arghh that art is so adorable I can't take it, so cute and fun!! And I love the way you used the patterned vs. solid colors for textiles and the background. It's bursting with fun visual detail without being busy, and that takes some skill. Also you have not lost your gift for emotive poses, I love how you give your subjects such such expressive body language!!

As I recall, Uhura loved music so much that she actually learned how to play the Vulcan lyrette, something non-Vulcans hardly ever managed to do. I wonder what song she and Janice are turning into a duet. Nyota Uhura was more than just an interstellar switchboard operator! (One episode of TOS showed her with her head inside her comm console, repairing something instead of waiting for Engineering to come fix it. (And the movie where Spock's bastard half-brother psychoanalyzes "God" includes a bit of romance between Uhura and Scotty.) I can hear the two women playing games with the counterpoint of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" (Ah....ah ah ah, a weem-a-way weem-away)

When I worked at the UN, there was a concert for just the delegates, featuring Pearl Bailey (who was the US Cultural Ambassador to the UN) and Miriam Makeba, who was just becoming known outside of Africa.) As an audiotech, I wound up editing the recording a bit. Those two ladies were having more fun than was legal in some countries ;-) That's what I hear from Miriam and Nyota!

I was very pleased to get the job at United Nations Radio. The work itself wasn't usually very challenging, but it was almost always well-intentioned (basically a summary of news about the UN, in various languages.) One day I was recording the program as usual, and the person reading the news aloud had left me a copy of the script, to help me get the "quoted" sound bites in the right places.) After it was done, I picked up the script and tried to read it, and thought to myself "This doesn't look like Spanish. " I had listened to, recorded and edited, and ready the script of a presentation in Portuguese, a language I didn't know (and still don't). Of course I was higher than a spaceX cargo vessel filled with cannabis at the time. (During meetings, most of the delegates are usually drunk.)

Every time I travel to NYC for a medical event at NYULangone Hospital, I pass the main entrance to the UN on First Avenue. Maybe someday after the quarantine ends, I'll work things out so I can go in and take the tour, and see if there's anything in the gift shop that I can afford.

The UN's most important work is humanitarian activities like the WHO, Unicef, the High Commision for Refugees, the FAO, and quite a few others. The peacekeeping activities are the least useful ones.
