I'm not even mad that Tom Cotton said that slavery was "a.necessary evil" -- it's in character for him. He's an asshole. I'm mad that probably 100 million Americans agree with him, rough estimation. Goodness knows I've been told this to my face several times, and I'm not even that old.

and then there was tonight, about which I have already said too much. I failed at everything tonight.

I am lagging at work and sad and discouraged. please tell me something good. lie to me if you have to.

There is escaped garden phlox blooming all over my unmown back yard. Much of it is white but there's a sport of this cultivar that's pink with a paler pink eye, and it makes a very nice contrast. Lots of pretty weeds are blooming too, but we are in a kind of transition zone between midsummer and late summer weeds, so the more intentional plants are welcome.

When I think of cotton, I don't think cotton gin. I think of fellow humans sweltering in the sun, perhaps with a bull whipped "owner" overseeing them.

Yeah, I know. Not something good. I'm hoping that, considering the protests going on in the US, the way the descendants of those fellow humans can expect this and future generations will treat them will be vastly improved.

My Teenager is cursing their current medical issues in Classical Greek. I think they attacked a river a few times.

Pandemic survival mode is PTSD inducing. There will be Horrible, Awful, No Good Days.

Racists will be awful. They see their power being taken from them and they lash out trying to yank it back, flailing in their death throes.

There was enough rain here last year that all the foliage now is well-nourished and blooming copiously. Beautiful. Fruit trees have clusters of ripening oranges and avocados. (Avocados are tricky. Like humans, they get big as full-grown before they are truly matured. You have to let them finish.)

I know most people won’t think of that as a good thing. But I find it comforting to think that life will thrive on this planet, long after we are gone.
