I haven't posted art here in much too long. Both of these were drawn for
drawesome. The first is SFW an the second NSFW.
Poison Ivy:

For the 'Villains' challenge. I drew her as I thought she might think of herself, which isn't villainous but protective.
Minoan Mermaid:

The spiral was a shape I needed to incorporate into the drawing.

Yeah, as soon as I saw the spiral element I thought MINOANS OOOH and went from there.

Date: 2017-08-10 08:46 pm (UTC)Woot! I am so pleased that she pleases you. And I really loved both the effect of the spiral waves and that they came out exactly like how I thought they would. I'm really pleased with her.
I'm contemplating making stickers of her but I might have to give her a bandeau and that just seems very out of character.

Date: 2017-08-11 10:17 am (UTC)Furthermore, your mermaid is also culturally Minoan, and would probably consider covering her breasts to be almost blasphemous. Minoan women were proud of their breasts, proud that they had breasts in the first place, and I suspect that Minoan women thought that women of other cultures who covered their breasts were hopeless prudes or something.
How about putting ratings on your stickers and fridge magnets - G, PG-13, and possibly even R if necessary? (I have my own opinion of whether nudity is "immoral", and whether we need to protect people under 18 from the sight of it, but that's a rant for another time and place.) I'd be proud to display your Minoan Mermaid!

Date: 2017-08-10 08:42 pm (UTC)beams I am delighted to have pleased you. :)
These are an interesting juxtaposition, because Poison Ivy came out very differently from how I envisoned her but the Mermaid is about as close as I've ever come to accurately getting my idea down on paper (well, a screen).

Date: 2017-08-10 08:19 pm (UTC)Thank you so much! Yeah, when I drew her I was surprised by her earnest body language and facial expression, and then thought about it and realized that that interpretation definitely fit. Everyone is the hero of their own story, after all.

I love the Minoans for many aspects, but one definitely is their barebreastedness. :D

That was a nice moment of creativity. I just... saw her in my head, and she looks almost exactly like my first vision of her. Am I ridiculous to be this pleased?

Date: 2017-08-11 01:10 am (UTC)Just out of curio city, what is with the jewels (?) around your mermaid's waist? So technically she is not naked? [g] A nice touch, if I may say so.

Date: 2017-08-11 01:15 am (UTC)Hee, I like your reason for approving of my Poison Ivy pic.
The beads the mermaid is wearing are just a reference to the strings of beads Minoan women wear around their necks, wrists, and sometimes even ankles. I threw in one at her waist as well to replace their elaborate belts.

Date: 2017-08-11 10:21 am (UTC)The beads around her waist remind me of "belly chains", worn by modern women with bikinis or hip-hugger pants. Everything old is new again ;-)

"She smiled at him very graciously when he was introduced to her."
From the chapter, "Princess Orchid's Party"
From the book "Fairies I Have Met" by Mrs. Rodolph Stawell, so beautifully illustrated by Edmund Dulac (French-born, British naturalised magazine illustrator, book illustrator and stamp designer, 1882-1953)
And here's the link to the entire book!
