minoanmiss: Minoan lady holding recursive portrait (Recursion)

In honor of my day off \o/ and dedicated to [personal profile] reesespiecescat :D

One of the nifty things about using a computer program to draw has been creating recursive images using c&p rather than laborious redrawing. So I've been reading up on recursive images, not least to find more recursive image ideas to draw.

European cocoa brand Droste uses this effect on their packaging -- note the image on the box on the tray. One day I'll get my hands on an actual hard copy box (and also see if the cocoa is tasty).

According to Wikipedia this 14th century Italian triptych is the first known recursive image that contains an exact miniature of itself, with that miniature containing a miniature, and so on.

This XKCD comic illustrates how, in practicality, one can only go down so many iterations before th nature of matter means there's not enough to carry the information of the image.

Recursive images can be very simple, but they don't have to be.

This logo is a partial recursion (to the artist's relief, the bunny's arm cuts off where all the other recursions would be)

One way to create such an image is by including an image display in its camera's field of view. A few more along those lines:

Perhaps maybe not this last but I couldn't resist Mr. Colbert.

One common computer-generated way of creating recursive images is to spiralize them. The spiral appears to vanish into the 'abyss' (the French term is 'miss en abyme', 'into the abyss').

Another way (which I like better, and not just because it's how I make mine) is to cause the image to be a discrete part of itself. People reading periodicals on which they appear:

Portraits and other images that contain themselves:

images where a miniature copy is a component of the larger:

Inspired by all of this I've made a few recursive images of my own. And of course I'm on the lookout for that lost wormhole.

My mom used to use Droste's chocolate when I was a kid, that looks familiar. I think she used it for special things.

A long time ago, there was a brand of soda called Cliquot Club (meant as an allusion to Veuve Cliquot champagne). The bottle was labeled with a picture of a little boy in servant's livery holding a bottle of the soda, which had a picture of a little boy holding a bottle of soda, which had... et cetera ad infinitem :-)

I have to admit that the XKCD image caught my eye. Being one of MASSFILC's model railroaders, I would never even THINK of attempting recursivity, especially on a HO layout. On a Standard or O gauge layout, OTOH...

How funny-- though we renamed them, our cats were named by the shelter Reeses and Skittles. :D

That's cute! We have a whole cat family tree named after Reeses, because I was really young and named all our cats through the years after snack foods.

Someone I used to have friended on LiveJournal had a family tradition where every year she and her husband and daughters have a family portrait photo taken of them holding the previous year's photo.

Late to the recursivity party, this always amuses me even it's not "proper", just indie comic creators and fans trolling eachother: http://www.recalledcomics.com/SexCriminals6BrimpceptionVariant.php
