I wish I could play with my neighbor's dog.


We have a feckless neighbor who has obtained a sweet natured golden retriever-esque dog, who spends a lot of time on his (second story) balcony, making lonely noises whenever anyone comes by. I wave to her and call her by her name and she wags her tail at me. I'm not even a dog person but how could I not respond to a lonely friendly entity?

I wish I could obtain some cheap balls and play fetch with her, but she is a puppy, and the balcony fence is not that high. If she got too excited and jumped over and fell off the balcony it would be several differnt kinds of disaster (especially since I doubt the neighbor or the police would think anything but that I deliberately lured the poor dog towards hurting herself). I always feel bad when I see her alone on the porch, but I can't think of what I could do for her, especially from a storey down.

Is this neighbour at all a friend or acquaintance? Maybe you could offer to mind the dog sometimes when they're out.

Alas, this guy is a selfish,thoughtless twit. Volunteering to do him a favor like dogsitting would backfire, I'd bet money.

It's a damn shame when animals end up in the hands of people who don't deserve them. Just don't go all John Wick on the dude. (You turning into a dog person after watching all three of the movies?)

Is she... otherwise well-treated? You have me wondering if there's some means of requesting a welfare check on a puppydog.

i wish people who weren't willing to take care of pets properly wouldn't get them :(

I AM a dog person, but I don't currently have one because I'm not well enough to take good care of one and don't wish to take bad care of one. I wish other people did the same!

Aw, that's a shame. Especially as a puppy she needs people-time (and other-dog-time if possible) for socialization.

Ack, yes. I feel like I'm doing badly by a developing mind by not figuring out how to interact with her, but if I get her excited and she falls off the porch it won't help anyone (and I think she would be strong enough to jump that high, from what I know of dogs).
