Ooh. After a day spent doing traditionally American things like mowing the lawn and washing dishes, that made my day and was well worth the few minutes spent on it. My thanks, and my wishes for independence to you and yours.
What I take comfort in is the poem on the Statue's pedestal, which I've discussed with you before: "...a mighty Woman with a torch, and Her name, 'Mother of Exiles'..."
And earlier in the day I was having an online conversation with someone who was talking about the flag. I said that, having grown up with NYC "just over the horizon", I witnessed all the diversity of backgrounds and skin colors and languages and cultures and religions and opinions that make up what I think is America's greatest strength. And, to me, the flag represents that diversity: we've got red stripes, white stripes, deep blue sky, and shining white stars, all together harmoniously on one flag. This person and I both agreed on one thing: the one essential principle in the world is LOVE, starting with "Love thy neighbor" - even if she has an accent or his skin's a different color than yours. (Take 'em a casserole!)
For a while a few years ago I was doing what I called Glory Variations: different arrangements of • stripes • stars ° (optionally a field) • 13 • 50 • red • white • blue I made two of them into blog icons: the one The one on this comment and...
AAMOF, I also feel the first one (my "Glory Variation #2", because that was
the second one I put up for blogging) is positive and the second one rather
negative, and that's how I use them, more or less.
