minoanmiss: Minoan lady in moon (Minoan Moon)

[personal profile] rachelkg very generously took me to see it, and it was as awesome as advertised. When one writes a movie about women where all the women are assumed to be sentient three dimensional people, awesome things can happen! Who knew! (Also anyone who thinks this movie is misandrist is confusing "women who are not adjuncts to men" with "women who hate men". See my comment about assuming women to be sentient 3d people above. )

People being what they are, I love this movie despite people saying things like "However, if they had done something like say, make Captain Marvel African-American, there would be an outrage because that would be a last-ditch effort to “represent.”" It's not like Monica Rambeau, wise and adorable kid in the movie, was actually a Captain Marvel in the comics (preceding Carol) or anything. Sometimes I really wish that people were better at realizing, "The feelings of lacking representation which I have felt as a member of X group, these members of Y group have also felt." Sigh.

At least if Marvel keeps putting Black people in sidekick roles ('sidekick or Wakandan, your choice', I guess) they make those sidekick roles pretty dang awesome. (I just realized I can't say more without spoilers, but oh, the awesome.)

Sociopolitics aside-ish, Brie Larsen did a great job (she wasn't stiff, she was not weepy. There's a huge difference. She was full of emotion! In awesome ways!) and Lashana Lynch hit it out of the park (she made me cry, twice) and the effects were lovely. And the musical nostalgia was terrifying for me (augh, actual music of my actual youth, I even lip-synched to two of the songs) which means they did their jobs. And I thought the plot was coherent and pleasantly twisty.

And I need to write some Carol/Maria, omg. And I find Yon-Rogg's relationship with her really interesting. I might write [non-shippy fic] about that too.

So, I loved it and want to see it again.Despite both angry fanboys and too many of my fellow fangirls.

Saaaame at Lashana making my eyes rain. My first thought on watching was an AU where Maria became Captain Marvel and Carol was raising Monica along with Maria's parents, but it felt too cruel to Monica, particularly the ending. Monica as Captain Marvel is perfect and the sequel I want.

I "loved" Yon-Rogg in the sense that they made his macho "prove yourself to me!!" schtick ridiculous and he wasn't even given the dignity of being killed--heck, Carol literally dragged him to his shuttle and he couldn't even fly off in a straight line, the shuttle had to go puttering off crooked. XD The story as a whole did a great job of subverting the stoic warrior schtick, and I don't think anyone could have missed the parallels between Kree militaristic imperialism and the ethos of the good old U.S. of A.

OMG, yes. Law did a great role with the part -- he reminded me of the better parts of Tennant as the Purple Man in the Jessica Jones series. That mix of completely off base entitlement and earnest whackiness. "I am so proud of you" -- our theatre burst out laughing.

I LOVED Maria and really thought her role was comparable to Sam's in TWS -- only even beter, we got more details of her as a person. Fury too. NICK FURY, CAT MAN.

Sociopolitics aside-ish, Brie Larsen did a great job (she wasn't stiff, she was not weepy. There's a huge difference. She was full of emotion! In awesome ways!)

THE MONTAGE, OMFG. It was even BETTER than in the trailer and that is saying something.

Lashana Lynch hit it out of the park (she made me cry, twice)

She and the child actress were BOTH so good. I loved their interaction together too.

And I need to write some Carol/Maria, omg.

ALL THE CAROL/MARIA, AMIRITE

Lynch was, indeed, freakin' awesome.

I hope to be able to go to a movie starring Monica Rambeau sometime, f'serious.

(I forgot fandom takes offense at people who say things like, "This did not represent me, and it did in some ways minimize the African American roles." Like, Brie Larson can have been awesome, and _Captain Marvel_ can have been an awesome movie, and yet still have some issues. An issue? Often has many sides. Odd, I know.)

I did so love the standing up montage. Pitta pat.

Ooh I have been waiting for your reaction! Pleased that you enjoyed it, and your review is spot on. Like others I loved Jude Law's character being all huff puff Prove it basic movie shittyman and getting what he deserved xD

...Now that Monica Rambeau is in the MCU might we one day get a Nextwave movie... 9_9 (I mostly jest, methinks it could only work as a Spiderverse type animation)

I need to go see it again. I was so tense from fear that the last five minutes would entail seeing these new characters evaporate that I missed out on a lot of the joys of the movie. But yes, 3D sentient women characters FTW! Can't wait to read your Carol/Maria. (Might have to write some myself, too!)
