That was a perfect Father's Day movie for people who aren't the fondest of our fathers. And lots of other people too, as it was fun, bright, and as WD put it, "cheesy without being stupid". Also, it did better by its female characters than the first one.
Chris Pratt has a very sweet face, which was used quite well here. ANd in general it was just plain fun. Very little Overarching Plot, just enough angst to contrast nicely with the explosions, no motherfucking Tony Stark, just lots of fun and some heartwarming found family feels too.

Date: 2017-06-20 12:39 am (UTC)Funniest things ever... my son loves Tony. He's his favorite character BUT he loves him because he's an asshole, a hugely flawed character. Someone who keeps fucking up and doesn't quite seem to learn from his mistakes, just doubles down on them. He appreciates that Tony had a shit raising (what Marvel character didn't?), but that's no excuse for being such a dick. I find that so much more refreshing than those folks who insist that Tony Stark is this fragile, precious snowflake who can do no wrong.

BUT he loves him because he's an asshole, a hugely flawed character.
That is what's lovable about him, as demonstrated beautifully in IM3 and AOU. But/and he owns his mistakes and pays for them. To contrast, in CACW he doesn't lose anything -- Rhodey's broken back belongs to RHODEY, not Tony -- and other people lose SO MUCH. He doesn't apologize for anything, just soaks up Steve's apology and righteously delights in his former teammates' misfortune. And so much of the fandom unequivocally cheered for that. I saw people say that they hope Tony's new Avengers prospers while Team Cap fails at everything and ends up back in jail. I saw people say, as I said before, that Clint and Scott deserve to never see their children again. I saw someone say, recently, that we aren't allowed to feel bad about how Sam must have been reminded of Riley's fall by Rhodey's because Tony is the one who gets to feel bad about Rhodey's fall, not Sam, because Sam is a bad guy. I cannot even.
it just kills me. I feel like I found myself on the opposite side of a moral and ethical question from people I used to be friends/friendly acquaintances with -- the number of people who have said that Team Cap are morally wrong, are actual villains, that anyone who roots for them is a bad person, just breaks my heart. All these people who never met me who think a bad person over a movie which was supposed to be about moral complexities. I feel like I've been exiled from a fandom. And you saw the comments on my story House and Home -- it's amazing and terrifying to see how many people think that someone who sheltered someone in her home has no right to be upset with that person for having her husband jailed. It's astonishing.
A lot of my fandom friends are quite rightfully sick of hearing me complain about this and won't write me back about it anymore, so I can't even express what a relief it is to talk to you about this. hugs you
I have two story ideas after CACW. One is about Tony shredding Wanda's pictures of Pietro, buying the farm out from under the Bartons to render them homeless, dismantling Redwing and Sam's flight pack, making sure Cassie Lang is told her dad's a traitor, and generally scorching the earth the way I've experienced after the breakup of friendships in my own life. The other one, given me by
dsudis, is about Ross setting out
to publicly discredit Sam and say his military service never existed, a la
the Swift Boat malarkey (I have a whole rant about what it would mean for
a Black man like Sam to get thrown in jail and publicly branded a liar and
thug -- it's a threat that hangs over us all our lives like rape is hung
over women -- but I digress), and Tony and Rhodey deciding to use their
power and influence to publicly fight Ross and say who Sam, and Bucky and
Clint and Wanda and Steve, actually are, as the first step in
reconciliation. I keep going back and forth between which I believe in
more, which I would write if I could.
ANyway. collapses I have had a lot of that on my chest for a long time. Thank you for lending me an ear. :) And meanwhile, I need to finish my Diana/Steve/Lasso threesome. :D

Date: 2017-06-21 02:10 am (UTC)I guess I was lucky and the corner of fandom I was in seemed to be much more understanding of the complexity of CA:CW, plus, since I'm usually writing Clint, I'd obviously have folks who cared about Clint a whole lot so they saw his side. I even had a few folks who already loathed Tony Stark so they were definitely not on his side.
And believe me, I could go on and on...
I mean how long did Tony know about the Accords before Ross show up? Just how long does it take 117 countries to agree on anything? A long damned time. And he waits until the last minute to dump it on the team? When you know his lawyers had gone over the thing with a fine tooth comb for weeks, if not longer. It's stuff like that that makes me crazy. Because that is not acting with honor or with good intent.
And why is it that everyone is all about "poor Tony" and no one gives a damn about Steve? He's lost so much and they insist he sign the Accords immediately after Peggy's funeral? With no accommodation at all? What the hell is the rush unless there's some nefarious plotting going on?
As for the story ideas, the first one is just too heartbreaking. And as much as I dislike the Tony stans, I don't actually hate Tony Stark. He's an entitled asshole who will violate the Accords any time he damn well wants and he fucked up everything and knows it, but I just can't imagine him being so spiteful once he gets over the shock and all that he's done settles on his shoulders.
And just think, at some point he's going to have to explain himself to Bruce. I want to see that scene. I want to see him try to explain to Bruce Banner why and how he could ever have aligned with Ross.
I cannot wait for your Diana/Steve/Lasso threesome! OMG!
