More Tumblr Thoughts

1) Tumblr deleted the Chronic Pain tag and is flagging things like text posts about queer history. Unsurprising and infuriating.

2) People are making directories. I am not going to say this on Tumblr because I try not to be one of those people who discourages others for the fun of destructivity (or to seem like one), but between my early Internet training ("don't give anyone any personal info ever!") and my thoughts of what all the people whom I've ever fought with could do with my personal info (life experiences I don't need: being doxxed!) I think those directories have some dangers. How long until some enterprising anti decides to go through one for everyone she's deemed a "pedophile", Google them, and find their workplaces, etc?

3) speaking of, due to the discussions of if/where/who is actually misusing Tumblr, I have learned more about online pedophile communities than I ever wanted to know and every time I think about it I feel unclean. Ugh.

4) I saw a post touching on "why is sex the Bad Impure Thing in US culture anyway?!" and I hope more people write about that in detail. In US culture Rambo and The Passion of the Christ are seen as fine to show kids, but no female-presenting nipples, oh no!

5) Speaking of writing essays, part of me wants to go for broke and finally write all my angry fandom responses like Why I Identify With Steve Rogers And It's Not Because Either He Nor I Are Fascists, Scott Lang Is A Good Father Dammit, The Fundamentalist Church Of Tony Stark, Not Everything Actually Is About Sociopolitics And I Can't Believe I Have To Be The Person To Say That, Your Complaints About This Genre Of Fiction Existing Show That You've Never Actually Read Any Of It (aka What Stories About Taboo Subjects Are Actually About), The Difference Between Not Wanting Racist Fanworks And Being An Anti-Shipper (aka Conscious Grappling With Topics vs Unexamined Assumptions), Fandom Has No Age Limit And How Do You Plan To Enforce It Anyway, and so on. My wise friends are trying to save me from my fighty side. It's a pity I'm not writing Steve anymore; maybe I should write something about Rey and Finn and their fighty sides (they both have them).

Anyway, I should go do something useful with my day.

Oh tumblr! I don't think any nice content is safe anymore, better to download the things I want to keep seeing (ie my certain entire tags). I'm sure anatomy art tutorials (bare bones and muscles! How scandalous!) and soccerboy photos (Men being affectionate and touchy eith each other! Too saucy!) are in danger as well.

Could you post your essays in here instead? I'm sure you could get intelligent discussions going on and less dogpiling and fear of doxxing because Someone Online Disagrees With You.

True. Part of my consideration is what I should even write, though -- for instance, the Tony Stark one definitely doesn't apply to all his fans, just a particular nasty subset .

Thankfully I missed that whole wank entirely because I stay on DW and rarely read Tumblr.

Tumblr was great for images, but I always had trouble actually interacting or making connections over there. Maybe I'm too old and too set in my ways, but I much prefer the LJ/DW format for interacting. I'm hoping that this will bring an influx of users and "life" to DW while fandom at large figures out a replacement for Tumblr's graphical side. Because let's face it Tumblr excelled at graphics, but that's where things have always hit a snag, so it'd be great if fandom built and supported something like Ao3, but for graphics/images, you know?

Personally, I'm crossing my fingers that DW will become a central hub so that activity can stem from here and then be linked to where it works best, like Ao3 for fic, Discord for chatting, etc. If that makes sense?

Also, I love your meta and your fandom feels and I absolutely 100% am here for whatever you write!

This is is what always, ALWAYS fucking happens, it's ALWAYS the queer and pro-woman
stuff that goes first, we're the ones that get thrown under the bus (try telling that to the fucking antis). I've seen this happen before! I saw this happen as a kid in the SEVENTIES! It's not the fucking sick patriarchy making money off abusing women and children that gets targeted! Tumblr never gave two shits about the horrible hardcore demeaning shit, nope, or the ACTUAL child porn that plagued them. Or the fucking pornbots. (Who keep following me, in the midst of the purge.)

Yeah, I think it's a combination of The Facebook Effect (plaster your IRL info everywhere, the better for all the companies to connect it and make $$$ off it -- oh, I don't think people know that! A lot of companies don't get stuff that is directly identifying -- they get, say, your shopping habits at Big Grocery -- but then they get other info they cross-reference and are able to target various populations. This in fact happened with the Facebook hack and the Russians getting a lot of data about who to target with fake ads, IIRC. So all this "well my real name's not on any of it"....yeah. Given enough connections, people can figure out who you are.

(My really sour comment is "I can see a whole lot of you have never been stalked/harassed," but nobody needs that.)

Oh yeah, notoriously, super tame simulated sex scenes with a half-clothed actress will get a movie an automatic R, but violence gets PG-13 ratings because we need the kiddies to go. The sick culture perpetuating itself.

Thanks to my work I know more about online pedophile communities than I ever wanted to know and it is why I will never, ever post pictures of my kids on social media. Just can't. Don't judge others who do, but I can't.
