I need to make some more icons. I have the perfect image for this post, thanks to
ilthit the artist, but I don't have it iconized.
In order from least to most happy making: Tumblr, which never heard of nuance, is having a discussion/backlash against Wonder Woman because Gal Gadot, who plays the titular character, is Israeli and has used her fame to make pro-Israel statements. The criticisms of her span a gamut, but some definitely make that gamut overlap with anti-Semitism. As ever, I feel this is complicated, and I'm American enough that I can hear voices in my head yelling "but people are being oppressed! people are dying! people have died! people suffered genocide! How can you obfuscate by calling it complicated!" I can empathize with those on both sides, but not with bigotry, and anyway, I'm not sure the movie was meant to be a referendum. (But of course there ar movies I haven't seen because I felt they were...)
Anyway, I unfollowed two people so far over this. One wrote about hating the movie, and I kind of wanted to challenge her reasons; I felt like in some places she was reaching for a reason to be contrary. (I don't thnk the Amazons' magnificent deaths in battle were evidence of misogyny -- they were the furthest thing from helpless Disposable Women getting Stuffed into Refrigerators). OTOH I totally understood her disappointment with the heterosexuality even as I personally loved the love story. I really like het love stories where both partners treat each other as sentients, rather than the girl being a good conduct (or worse, bad conduct) prize for the boy, but I also sympathize with and share the desire to see normalization of love stories that aren't het (I mean, an island full of Amazons! OPPORTUNITY! Who did they think they were kidding by making the Obvious Wives call each other 'sister'?!) Still, people are allowed to dislike things even if I think they're just trying to be contrary, so this is me not challenging her.
Meanwhile, the rest of my corner of Tumblr is OVERJOYED AND I AM OVERJOYED WITH THEM I haven't gotten to roll around in delight like this in awhile. I almost forgot the feeling. Two of the approximately 70 million posts which made me happy today:

I LOVE this feeling of being happy with other people about something, of reading about all the details people noticed, of all th ideas people have come up with. I'm not interested in the rest of th DCEU (gritty grim dark bla bla bla) but Wonder WOman has reminded me of the delights of being fannish.
What stories could I write for her, maybe?

Date: 2017-06-06 08:55 am (UTC)Diana as fish out of water was fun, she was never shown being stupid in the modern world, just slightly confused with the patriarchal culture and not being allowed to walk around with a sword in hand :D Also the costume design was nice. I still am not a fan of WW's strapless top, and there was a mite too much thighlighting, but she also had other looks like the amazing cape and the ensemble wth the hat.
I think the WWI setting was a good choice, showing the diversity and the horros of war effortlessly. (The Germans taking off their gas masks in the end being teenagers? Such a great, poignant moment, I'm glad Patty Jenkins Went There.)
On a related note, here was a good reply on the Gal Gadot thing: http://fuckyeahwomenfilmdirectors.tumblr.com/post/161080731896/hi-ive-seen-you-post-a-lot-of-wonder-women-stuff

Date: 2017-06-07 05:40 am (UTC)Diana's fighting costume, while stunning, really did show too much skin for anyone but a goddess, who can be assumed to be more durable than human flesh. But, we still need all the human heroines in Marvel/DC to have better armor. We need about a dozen more movies about them, too.

Date: 2017-06-06 07:38 pm (UTC)Wow, that was idiotic of Ms. Magazine. And no, the people carrying on about Ms. Gadot don't carry on about Mr. Driver, or Mr. Evans (which latter I adore, but you have to take people as you find them). And when people went in the direction of blood libel I decided to nope on out of there. I half feel like I should have stayed and argued and half feel that I got a recent reminder of the uselessness of arguing.
ANYWAY, fuck all of them, WE HAVE WONDER WOMAN.
