I want to write about all I learned from him about writing and food and irreverence and true reverence but I am all out of eloquence and just sad and shocked.

All of the things you just said are things I could not figure out how to say. I settled on, "if you're considering suicide, please sleep on it. People love you. And the option isn't going to go away if you wait."

At a bit of a remove from his family, there is also what health care professionals call the Contagion (or copycat) Effect on people who are depressed enough to be seriously contemplating suicide.

Yeah. CNN talked a lot about that, and preventing it, in their tribute to him, which I thought was really humane and sensible of them.

He was basically my exemplar for what to do with wealth and power, non-toxic masculinity, good allyship, etc. This hurts.

He learned so much so hard, because he was open to learning, and shared that approach to lifelong learning and taught us so much. It does hurt. Damn.

That's a good and reasonable response. I didn't know him and only barely knew of him but I know that he mattered to a lot of people who matter to me.

Folks, if you know you'll face the darkness, please make a decision - now, while it seems sane and reasonable - not to die, and have friends who you trust will be there for you, when you need it. If you can't, promise yourself you'll go to a hospital - suicide watch *sucks*, but so does a colostomy; you'll get through it (just like the colostomy) and it's very likely you'll be glad you did.

Still... damn it, this isn't right, and it isn't fair. Mr. Bourdain, I don't know much of anything about you - but I know you faced the darkness, when you deserved the light - and life - when needed. I hope you're at peace.
