White House deletes racist Trump post depicting Obamas as apes

Ah, the free speech that Trump voters yearn for.

Last night I read a post reblogged by someone I quite like about how left wing people who respond to wails of "this is not who we are" with "this actually is who the US is and has been" are wrong and "illiterate"> I gave her a chance and wrote her about why I disagree with that post and we had a nice conversation. I kinda want to go back and show the OP of that post that yes, this is who the United States are and if we do not acknowledge the bigotries and violence this country has been built on at every level then how can we possibly change them? How can we do anything but wring our hands? Especially when 77 million grown adults and not a few of their rising children like the US just this way and approve of this being who we are?

But anyway.

The underbelly of American racism makes me facepalm so hard. Yes, this in fact who a lot of Americans are. No, that doesn't mean those of us who are overcome with rage at such bullshit agree, but -- crucially -- the assholes still count as part of the country for electoral purposes.
