The way I read it, if these charges are allowed to stand, I'm liable to charges of human trafficking if I give some rando a ride in my car and it turns out they're an undocumented immigrant.
While it's complete bullshit, it's not novel. I wanna say...maybe a decade ago? there was some discussion by attorneys general about fighting prostitution by going after the drivers and owners of car services and limo services that were transporting sex workers to outcall locations, and charging them with "human trafficking" offenses. This was before the rise of Uber and Lyft, which occupy the same space legally as a "car service" but use the internet for dispatch and billing. I never heard anything about actual prosecutions, maybe because Uber and Lyft came long not too long after that, or because there were serious concerns about whether they could get charges to stick, or maybe both.
Whatever, I hope the grand jury in Mr. Garcia's case refuses to indict.
