[personal profile] lyonesse just generously took me to the loveliest restaraunt, Juliet of Somerville in Union Square (on Washington Street, where the 86 heads down to Harvard Square). They fold the gratuity into the prices, so it looks expensive but it's not really that bad when you remember you don't have to tip. And they serve such lovely food! I had a platter of pickled shellfish and another of marvelous cheese, and shared beautifully cooked mussels with L, and just had a lovely time (excellent company also helps, of course. *beams*

Glad you enjoyed.

Do they have non-sea-food-y things that I might enjoy?

I just went and read their FAQ, and it sounds AWESOME:

Not exactly. There actually is no tip at all. When servers work for tips, they make a sub minimum wage (barely more than 3$ an hour), and they count on every dollar of those tips to make up a basic wage.

Juliet doesn't operate that way. All staff are paid a living wage (above minimum, and WELL above what would be the tipped minimum). This includes servers, cooks, support staff, and dishwashers.

That doesn't mean there is no incentive to deliver great service and provide an exceptional hospitality experience. There is actually an even bigger incentive:

At Juliet, all staff participate in a profit sharing arrangement with the owners of the restaurant. We count on your having a great time, and returning again and again, with friends. There is absolutely no expectation that you tip. In fact, we prefer that you don't. We work for wages, and for you; but not tips.

I'm glad you have such a goof friend and that she treated you to such delights. As to my ever patronizing the place, that won't happen. I won't go to any eatery that takes away my choice to tip (or not to tip!) its employees.

Yes, waitrons are in the difficult situation of not knowing how much money they will be taking home at the end of their shift. This is familiar to me, since I drove cab for many years in Boston.

Maybe some day all restaurant workers will be treated as good as Juliet treats its workers. One can hope.
