On one hand, I’m here for her action. On the other hand, the fact that she now says she regrets doing it (because she didn’t think she’d actually get arrested) is gross. She genuinely thought she’d get to do a little publicity stunt and that’s where it would end, because of course nobody is really going to be mean to her. She didn’t even consult a lawyer or activist organization first because she was so sure she was actually safe.
The fact that she describes herself as “very religious” and a “centrist” and into “family values” (a religious dogwhistle for a number of rotten things) had me twitching too. I’m not sure how much it helps my side to have posturing dilettantes playing at activism they don’t understand (and disclaim being a part of), especially if they’re opposing other human rights.
When I was her age I vocally believed in respectability politics. This is her first step down a long road of learning and meanwhile I salute her courage naïve though it wa

"She said: 'Everything that is politics seems very abstract and philosophical from far away. This is the first time it’s really affected me.'" Yep. Real conservative. Nothing matters until it directly affects them. Also, like a true conservative, she expected to not get arrested.
Granted, there's plenty of time and room for someone who's conservative and 20 years old to change their mind and their direction in life, and I hope she does, but for now? Stop. Helping.
I genuinely hope she does go in a better direction, and this could be her wake-up call in the end. At this time, she isn’t someone I trust to be on the side of liberation, and I think she may do more harm by running around talking about how she regrets it. The heroines I want have the courage of their convictions, not ones who back away publicly after they face a consequence that they thought was make-believe.
Heh, remember larval!Buppie me at 20? I count as liberal in the US because for obvious reasons I don't think POC are subhuman but I was a lot more conservative then than I am now. I think this girl had Baby's First Outgroup Experience. I may be being too sympathetic but I think (I hope) she will learn from this.
I hope so too. I just desperately wish she wasn’t handing things to the transphobes right now by saying things like “I went in the wrong bathroom.” No, no you didn’t. You went in the right one. It was illegal but it wasn’t wrong.

But yeah, let's hope she treats this as a learning experience, in a lot of different ways.
