dang, I forgot who on my flist mentioned Amy Lowell, the Most Talented Lowell in my naturalized Bostonian opinion. I'm not going to post Patterns because it's long, but it's glorious. Here's a shorter one.

The Giver of Stars
Amy Lowell
1874 –
1925
Hold your soul open for my welcoming.
Let the quiet of your spirit bathe me
With its clear and rippled coolness,
That, loose-limbed and weary, I find rest,
Outstretched upon your peace, as on a bed of ivory.

Let the flickering flame of your soul play all about me,
That into my limbs may come the keenness of fire,
The life and joy of tongues of flame,
And, going out from you, tightly strung and in tune,
I may rouse the blear-eyed world,
And pour into it the beauty which you have begotten.

Oh, I don't know that one! How splendid!

She died fairly young, I don't think I knew that.

OKAY... Not to slide in here and boast, but, uh, I'm pretty sure reciting an Amy Lowell poem (Venus Transiens) to a girl got me laid once.

Bravissimə! (Lowell presumably had actress Ada Dwyer Russell in mind; the two had a happy as well as artistically fruitful Poet/Muse relationship.)
