Texas leaders defend Black official after lawmaker’s public interrogation of DEI policies left her in tears
The topic was a budget request from a state agency. The exchange grew emotional when a lawmaker pressed for answers about a strategic plan that praises diversity. That lawmaker is Rep and professional racist Brian Harrison.
I was in classrooms, not a state legislature, or foolishly fighting online, but I have more than once been interrogated by a smirking White man as to my worth as a person and my ability to retain enough knowledge to be qualified to speak because I' a Black woman. I know exactly what Texas Water Development Board Chair L’Oreal Stepney was put through.
I wish I had time to [re] learn how to put his statements through a fine screen and make it clear to everyone what his doublespeak actually means. I wish I could explain what he means by "I'm unaware of any statute or regulation that requires your agency to engage in race-based employment determinations that require you to mirror the diversity of society in general" and "“I'm not backing down. I'm going to keep fighting. Texans deserve it. Texans do not want their hard earned tax dollars used for racially discriminatory employment practices.” I wish I could prove what I see obviously that he means that hiring anyone who's not a White man is a blow against White men. I wish I could argue down without a shadow of a doubt absolutely everyone who would say I'm putting words in his mouth.
I wish.
