I cried at work on Friday. (No, this is, relatively speaking, a good thing).

My workplace has been on top of the current administration's thrashing of the US. They keep sending us updates on legal guidance and all sorts of resources to keep staff and patients safe. I am so impressed.

On Friday they wrote us about how TPTB are stripping Haitian immigrants of protected status by August, including in the email resources ranging from emotional to financial. My coworkers brought up in our group chat how awful this all is, and they all do think it's awful (some are Haitian and many of us are immigrants), and I thought of how I had to sit at work on Election Day 2016 and keep working despite the results and the staff cheering for them. I remembered how alone I felt.

I cried a bit. I wrote something encouraging in the chat. And I answered the next phone call.

This is the best job I've had in a very long time.

I am glad you have this job and the people in it.

I had no idea that Bostonians Against Sanctuary Cities existed and I would intensely prefer them not to.

I am thoroughly unsurprised that such an organization exists, given Boston's history of throwing rocks at school buses. Couple of years ago, a bunch of neo-Nazis showed up at the St. Patrick's Day parade.

I was born and have spent most of my life in the Boston area: the bigotry is not blue-state shock to me. Specifically this group, I had not run across before. They seem to have formed during the last administration of the man in the White House.

Ah. Yeah. Unfortunately I keep running into people who think we live in some kind of bubble here, and who are shocked to find that we don't. Combination of confirmation bias from hanging around like-minded people, and the fact that people here have mostly learned that it's considered unacceptable around these parts to use certain terms for groups of people in public.

The Red Line was built out to Alewife in my early childhood and my parents complained at the time that it had been nimbied out of running into Arlington which would have made everybody's lives much easier.

Yeah, it basically amounted to "Transit brings scary brown people."

Another transit nerd told me at one point that the plan to build the Red Line out Route 2 is still on the books, waiting, couched in polite sounding language like "waiting for natural turnover in land use" that roughly translates as "wait for the old racists to die or move to Florida."

Arlington reversed their official stance in 2023! I know this because I just looked it up.

"The most unpopular choice on the 1977 ballot (based on the number of NO votes recorded) was the option we are living with today: a Red Line terminus at Alewife."

Nice! I hope it actually gets built. Of course, in the current political climate, who knows.

I'm still going to hope! The plan has a serious champion.

Nice! I'm familiar with the name--he had a transit & road nerdery website going around the turn of the millennium.

In the past a project like this would have relied heavily on federal dollars. I don't think any of those will be coming our way any time soon. Even if not for the current administration, the cost overruns on the Big Dig have made Congress wary of sending Massachusetts any more big checks for federally funded public works projects.

I'm glad you're somewhere better these days.

Similarly, I was going to ask a question about DEI at my current workplace to be answered at the next company-wide meeting, but steps taken by $EMPLOYER in the meantime to make sure that DEI efforts continue kind of pre-empted that.
