(And, although I’ve never personally been pregnant, I’ve toyed with the idea of a pregnancy bench structured to allow people to sleep face-down late into the pregnancy: a long hollow rectangular storage bench topped with cushions, with a wide circular hole in the center—which, when not in use, would be stoppered with a circular cushion. Perhaps there’d also be a small stool of adjustable height inside, to support the distended belly. After childbirth, the bench could then serve as a combination bench and toy chest for the child.)
By the time I got to the bed with the hole, I had no dignity left at all. My body has been scrutinized, scanned, palpated, and mended so many times I just don't care who sees it all. (And before that, years of sky-clad rituals.)
