Who the FUCK would put ketchup on that? Ketchup is for burgers and fries, and maybe a glaze on meatloaf.

Last I checked, wasn’t a fairly strong-flavored garlic sauce, on top of a strong and complex spiced marinade, already inherent to shwarma?

Or if you’re from Halifax, the standard donair sauce there involves powdered garlic, condensed milk, and a lot of sugar. I know it has its fans, but having tried it, I’m not one of them.

Evidently not a Jewish interpretation, then. (My introduction to shwarma, as well as chumus (their spelling) and falafel, was circa 1980 at Shalom, an Israeli-American restaurant in the Ohio State University campus neighborhood.)

It was a Greek immigrant who came up with that version in the 1970s. It took off and has been popular ever since; a lot of places elsewhere in Canada offer Halifax-style sauces now too.

Doesn’t surprise me, given the huge Greek-diasporic influence on Upper Midwestern food culture (see also Cincinnati chili.)

Sounds like it—and I assure you the sauce at Shalom was nothing of the kind. (The meat marinade was dark, savory and funky in ways I’d never before encountered—I’m hazarding a guess that cumin played a significant role.)

I might actually like romcoms if the characters bantered like you two.

It's not just the banter. It's that rom-coms often contain multiple tropes that are actually Considered Harmful. In fact, a lot of them are like instruction manuals on how to get a restraining order taken out on you.

Unless, of course, it has to do with cooking, cleaning, child care, or non-business social network maintenance. Then men suddenly become helpless infants and women summa cum laude.

That, and ranch dressing. I was once in a Wal-Mart in Oklahoma City (visiting a friend there) and saw a gallon jug of the stuff. *shudder*

The condiments for shawarma include tahini, zhug (red or green), and/or amba (a pickled mango sauce). Ketchup is Right Out.

Ketchup is appropriate on meatloaf, hamburger, fries, scrambled eggs with potatoes and onions.
