Yeah, I know not all men are like this but my dad and my ex both had to be dragged kicking and screaming to the doctor and I handled all that for my ex until I left him and I know my mom handled it all for dad until the last couple of years when sister and I took over pretty much.

In the case of the two men I know from my examples, I don't think they felt that getting care was a sissy thing or beneath them.

They both just had this trait where if they didn't pay attention to something unpleasant, it didn't exist. That was the plan, anyway.

I think they might be edematous. The dialogue seems to imply to me that the person is diabetic and undernourishing themself.

Malnutrition causes edema? (I’ve sometimes suffered edema in my legs, but it usually had to do with long periods of standing or sitting immobile.)

Well, diabetes can lead to edema, especially badly treated diabetes.
