This attendance decline has been concentrated within mainline Protestants and Catholics – the Christian groups that, in the past, were most likely to vote Democrat and have more liberal social views.

I wonder what event might have happened in the early 2000s that might have precipitated declining church attendance, particularly among Catholics.

This might sound odd, especially from me (a multiply marginalized person who’s in several categories under attack by the right-wing), but I think it’s actually for the best for all of us if the right-wing is going after everyone.

Think of the right-wing as a mob of 10 people, and nearby we’ve got a disabled person, a Black person, a queer person, a woman, a trans person, and an immigrant. If the whole mob concentrates on one of those marginalized people, that person is toast.

But if the mob is divided - one’s attacking the immigrant, a couple are going after the gay dude, two are punching the immigrant but then they get distracted and go after the disabled person instead, and so forth - those marginalized people are going to have a much better chance of getting through this.

The right-wing is spreading themselves thinner every day. They’re spreading their energy everywhere and that leaves them with far less capability to do targeted, sustained attacks on any one marginalized group, which gives all of us a better chance of survival.

(And in my ideal world - and this does happen some in the real world, but anywhere near to the extent I’d like - all of those marginalized folks realize that their true enemy is the mob and not each other, and they join together in cross-group solidarity to defend each other.)
