There are Japanese and Chinese chefs whose execution of tuna salad cutely shaped to evoke the living fish would be a masterpiece for eye and palate alike; Iβm imagining some Uncle Roger type snarling, βGive me that before you can screw it up any further!β
That looks like a Jello-salad party mold from the 1950s. The stripes of orange aren't hot sauce - they're slivered carrots. And pimento-stuffed olives as eyes. This would be accompanied by crackers or melba toast. Dear gods, I remember learning how to make this shit in seventh grade home ec class.
Oh, carrots! I was trying to figure out what sauce would be that color. I've seen fish-shaped molds, though my friends in this century tend to fill them with egg salad.
I used to have a set of jello molds - a fish, a doughnut shape, and a hemisphere. They were a wedding gift fifty years ago. And they always included odd decorations - cream cheese dyed pink piped into roses around the jello. Or those weird olives. Or vegetables carved or twisted into the shape of a familiar object. And the fish mold was for "fish mousse", not jello salad.
A fish mold might be decorated with very thin slices of radish, painstakingly arranged like fish scales.

If you wanted to make this thing.
You could make it a sandworm I suppose.

Date: 2024-11-23 08:29 pm (UTC)that would have been glorious and fitting. I think gefilte fish would have ennobbled the project. But then I notoriously like the stuff.
