underlying everything, like the Balrog's cavern under Moria: underlying how people will not vote for a woman for president, underlying the overturning of Roe v Wade, the plans to eliminate no-fault divorce because it benefits women, the increasing calls to repeal the 19th Amendment, the voting coercion documented as being inflicted on women by their husbands, the catcalls and public harassment and on and on and on... underlying it all is the vast, deep, caustic contempt a plurality of American men have for their fellow women, and which a not inconsiderable number of women share as well.

And yet after a few weeks here I found something I hadn’t expected and was thus not looking for. Bad side: By contrast I realized how much deep-down constantly operational misogyny I was used to in the US. Good side: Here men have ordinary friendly conversations with women— old friends and new acquaintances— on the regular. The streets are full of men parenting all ages of children, and all ages of men walking with looks-like-women-partners hand in hand, enjoying each other’s company. A demonstration of possibility.

It is a general absence of predator-prey Zeitgeist. And the young and delectable strange_complex has felt the same in Yorkshire, she told me.

Looking at it again, I see that the Tolkien context could cut in two very different ways, and that I was insufficiently aware of my post-election irritability. Yes, I anticipate being in Yorkshire ten months of the year, for a few years to come.

It is an absolutely wonderful place, and I am more socially comfortable here than I have been anywhere else I’ve lived, despite the excessive caucasity of the demographic.

But contentment isn’t really a relevant mode for me, and no more is discontentment, though I’m a temperamentally happy and flexible person.

Do I take it correctly that you live in Florida?

I don't know what your level of experience is with firearms, but if you're new to shooting and firearms, please get instruction and training, even if your state doesn't require it. (I'm seeing a lot of nattering in liberal-leaning spaces about "I was always anti-gun but I'm thinking about buying one.")

Heeded. I'm not considering it so much because of the election, though. I'm thinking of when Trump pulls the United States out of NATO. When that happens, there's a real possibility that Russia will invade Poland and draw the remaining NATO countries into a global conflict. Canada will need to arm itself, especially since Putin has had his eyes on our arctic for a long time.

Basically, I'm preparing for World War Three. Which sounds fucking crazy, but it's a scenario that NATO's military leaders are thinking about.
