So today is my and WD's anniversary. Some years I haven't remembered, which is hilarious. But I remember this year.

I meant to write up a Thing but didn't manage it. But I did want to say:

The older and more experienced I get, the more often I see terrible ways people treat people they claim to love, the more I appreciate WD. From the start he has always treated me with kindness, respect, and care, even when I was young, silly, and vulnerable. He is brilliant and knowledgeable and has justice in his soul, and he is a very kind person indeed. Being a person of strong opinions I have some ex-friends, and whenever someone tried to make me feel small or worthless, or accused me of being something I'm not in order to hurt me, he has reminded me of who I am and who I can be. Whenever I look at him I see my best self reflected in his eyes.

Also he's really f'in funny. *beams*

I love you, sweetie. Here's to many more.

Happy Ever After doesn’t automagically happen once you’ve said “I do”; you folks understand that it requires everyday attention and maintenance. Congratulations!

(And kudos for your icon choice of the most loving and respectful spouses and parents on 60’s TV—to the extent that the narrative drama had to come from the family’s clashes with the outside world.)

I don’t know if either of you are familiar with Paula Cole’s “Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?” (1996); it’s the narrator’s lament that her marriage to a Good Ol’ Boy, far from being the prairie romance of her dreams, has gone sour and distant.

I have an entire canned rant about the TV families of my youth. "Marriage sucks and I hate my spouse" is a VERY large component of "Boomer humor".

And I have another one about people who romanticize dysfunctional relationships. (think Sid/Nancy, Kurt/Courtney, Joker/Harley Quinn, Mickey/Mallory Knox (Natural Born Killers), etc.)

Aw. congrats! That’s awesome. :) (And FWIW, we regularly forget our anniversary too. It just doesn’t seem as important when we treat each other well all the time, I suppose.)
