My own visions of this beautiful, energetic, city mesh with O'Keefe's. The stark high-contrast shapes express the "futuristic" nature of the city. And artists need to remember that not only nature's landscapes are beautiful. The sparkling lights of the skyline are just as worthy of admiration as a saguaro cactus silhouetted against a desert sunset. The sunlight making sparkles on the river is just as meaningful as the stars in the sky.
People think that human-made art isn't as "artistic" as the beauties of nature. I disagree. I find the sweeping curves of a massive suspension bridge more inspiring than any sculpture in a museum. We humans are part of "Nature", and the beauties we create are part of what makes us human.
Though I'd just like to punch the idiot who opined that New York was too masculine a subject for her to paint.
Steiglitz especially sounds like he was being territorial: his New York images were among the formative modernism of the city and of his career. My dude, I regret to tell you skyscrapers are for everyone.
