the NH libertarian party got entirely taken over by racist memelords in 2021, in a Sad Puppies style takeover that took advantage of low participation. Even most libertarians are repulsed by them; it's racist 8chan ragebait all the way down:

The child labor tweetstorm in particular was "an absolute win" for the L.P., Kauffman insisted, since the backlash—including from such people as Gary Johnson—only serves to spread radical ideas to those who wouldn't otherwise have been exposed to them.

It's spread pretty far, and a lot of old school libertarians are furious. I'd argue that they've ignored the dirtbags in their own party for a very long time.

But on the bright side it really is a small but successful crew of memelords with a megaphone, it's not representative of NH.

Libertarians are truly the most oppressed minority.

Based on my experiences with Libertarians, I expect they’re whining at least in part about age of consent laws. They think that having to wait until their targets are 16-18 years old denies them the “right” to molest children of any age. (Though they’ll spin it to be that “teenagers’ autonomy is being taken away”, but I note that they’re never pressing for the laws to be amended to allow teenagers to fool around with other teenagers while still being protected from molestation by adults. Legal access to teenagers by adults is always part of it.)

And yeah, I know there are many other issues with capital-L Libertarians, but as a childhood sexual abuse survivor, that one in particular gets under my skin.

I identified as libertarian (lower-case l) for quite some while, assuming that it consisted of the right to tend your own still and your own weed patch in your own yard beneath your own statue of Pan, with your own husband and your own wife, and your own shotgun to defend all of the above if need be.

Contact with actual Libertarians disabused me of that notion.

Yep. Pretty much everything that got me to sympathize with the Libertarian Party has either been rendered moot (repealing sodomy laws and allowing equal marriage) or adopted by at least one major political party (de-escalating the War On Drugs, legalization, harm reduction, and greatly reducing if not eliminating the use of asset forfeiture).

As late as the '90s there was honest debate within the LP on abortion and immigration and they've come down on the wrong side of both as far as I'm concerned.

At this point they're pretty much just Republicans who want to smoke weed.

I do draw a difference between lower-l and capital-L in this case; while I’ve yet to meet a Libertarian who doesn’t suck ass in a bad way, I’ve met a fair number of small-l libertarians who were generally decent (and all identified explicitly as small-l because they also were horrified by what was going on with the capital-L party).

So I won’t hold anyone being small-l against them, but big-L is never welcome in my space or around my kids.

I used to be in a friends group infested with probably-small-l-libertarians and I still got sick of "I have the right to shoot you if you put one foot on my lawn," "Head Start is a waste of money," "I have the right to decide to never sell anything to a [insert demographic group here] it's my theoretical store," and so on. Everything you've said here is really flipping resonant for me.

See, another small-l-libertarian assumption I’d had was that libertarians would consider courtesy a core value: the more of the social contract is carried in the I-Thou attitude, the less has to be legislated. (“When people lost sight of The Way, then came codes of love and honor.”)

I avoid ill-wishing people because of the Law of Threefold Return. But after the first shooter missed Trump, I found myself thinking "too bad he wasn't a better shot". But I can't let myself think that way, because I don't want to have anything seriously harmful happening to me or anybody I love. So even though the fat guy with the bad toupee is a dangerous and hateful person, and the consequences of him becoming President again are terrifying, I'd better let the three American goddesses take over:

The thing is that it isn’t our side doing the assassination shit. It’s the right wing’s chickens coming home to roost. If they want it to stop, then they need to address stochastic terrorism and the easy availability of guns. But we all know they’re not going to do so. So since they’re busy nurturing these monsters, my only emotion is relief every time one of their monsters turns on them rather than coming for us.

In this case, Trump discovered that when you court these kinds of followers, you’ll get a vote out of it, but if they become disillusioned with you, you may well end up with far more mess than the vote was worth.
