And I wonder whether they’d issue Indignant Statements about Rejecting Our History to this being publicly held out in forensic tweezers.
From back when George Herbert Walker Bush winsomely labeled Michael Dukakis “a card-carrying member… [pause] of the ACLU,” I’ve been noticing GOP pols faux-facetiously identifying with classic right wing oppressions past. I only learned a few years ago that that’s a deliberate recruiting approach of the right.
In this case, though, I wonder whether it was a genuine self-disclosing slip. Because since 2017 if not earlier, the GOP has been embracing its rightmost wing and kind of showcasing activism and styling that teeter on the brink of goose stepping. “Join us! We’re powerful and that’s cool! If you’re one of us, more and more official power to wield over those you’ve always known were your inferiors! And to those inferiors— join us now and you’ll be trampled less violently and killed later!”
Which, happily, has kind of blown up in their faces.

Yep—-it’s a nudge of the Overton Window. A useful rule of thumb is that a conservative joke is a threat with a laugh track.

(“And you’d better jump through hoops to prove you’re not one of those inferiors, are you. And the definition of real people will keep narrowing and narrowing and narrowing.”)
It’s reached the point where they don’t even feel the need to bother with hypocrisy any more.
I felt that, beyond that, they felt so certain of near-universal admiration that they were flaunting it as an attractant-- but have been reprimanded by electoral results.
Arguably the most 'cardboard cutout villain' moment I've seen since an immigration minister here in the UK, Robert Jenrick, had cartoon murals in a centre for child refugees painted over because they were too welcoming.
So they are so "originalist" that they deny the validity of amendments-- which are created following the procedure created in the original? Only "originalist" when it works for them.
What the actual f...? There is zero basis for their claims. This is just stirring stuff, or I guess they figure they might win a judge lottery, even though it would be held up in appeals and what they're trying can't possibly work. Bonkers!
