The Isabella Stewart Gardner museum pleases me because if I had been in her place I would have done exactly as she did and amassed a museum's worth of things that pleased me, minimalism be damned. It also pleases me because it lets in people named Isabella for free, which I make sure to tell to every Isabella I run across. On Monday I was speaking to a patient via a translator and the name Isabella came up in her circle and I was delighted to tell them both about this and they both were vocally delighted to hear it.

That's all, but it's a small recurring delight. Long live the quite dead but still awesome Mrs. Gardner!

That’s delightful that they let other Isabellas in free!

Also I would love to be the kind of person who amasses a museum’s worth of paintings, but I’ll likely never be able to afford a single painting from any of my favorite artists, much less many! I need to develop less expensive taste in artists. (I have five favorite artists. Tamara de Lempicka’s weakest sketches run like $25k at auction, while her best paintings can pull in $7-$9 million. Frida Kahlo’s paintings run about the same. Hajime Sorayama’s smaller works run about $35k to millions. H.R. Giger’s signed prints run tens of thousands of dollars, much less originals. Junji Ito’s tiny sketches often run for thousands, but at least he’s still alive and should be for awhile yet, so I can hold out hope that I might be able to get something someday.

Sigh. I have to content myself with tattoos, of which I have a huge one in the style of Giger and a smaller one in the style of Kahlo, and the next planned one is in the style of Ito.)

What artists would be in your museum if you had an unlimited budget?

You also have expensive taste, LOL! Looks like $2-4 million isn’t uncommon for his paintings.

At least we can go to museums to see originals, right?

Ooh! Your top-tier antiquities you’d want then?

I’d love a collection of replicas of dead folks in reproductions of burial sites from around the world. The ways that each culture chooses to release their dead - how they dress their deceased loved ones, the poses they use, the objects they place with the dead to accompany the dead into their cultural conceptions of an afterlife - are fascinating.

When I was a kid growing up, the relatives always tried to find things that my cousin and I (being almost the same age) could do together. She always loved the Gardner museum. I always preferred the Museum of Science, and the Planetarium (and the Lightning Show).

What a great idea. If I ever found a museum, I'll let people with my name in free, too. <3
