minoanmiss: world's oldest olive tree, in Crete. (Minoan Tree)

In western lands beneath the Sun
the flowers may rise in Spring,
the trees may bud, the waters run,
the merry finches sing.
Or there maybe 'tis cloudless night
and swaying beeches bear
the Elven-stars as jewels white
amid their branching hair.

Though here at journey's end I lie
in darkness buried deep,
beyond all towers strong and high,
beyond all mountains steep,
above all shadows rides the Sun
and Stars for ever dwell:
I will not say the Day is done,
nor bid the Stars farewell.

Bill Nighy sang it in the 1981 BBC Lord of the Rings. It always raises the hair on my skin.

quite early, started with the hobbit and just got to the rivendell part of lotr. haven't reread the book in forever, but remember a surprising amount of it :) (I went through a phase of rereading it once a year when I was in high school/college)

I was reminded of this, which remains one of my favourite things I've written. You should like it too :)

In Isengard the waters spill
About the tower, dark and still,
That stands, alone, untouched; around
The shattered ruins strew the ground
Where we defied a wizard's will

We are the Ents. In silent ranks
We wrenched the Isen from its banks
To sweep away the unclean mound
Of Isengard

Long have we suffered fire and blade
The slaughter of a helpless glade
No more in Fangorn shall be found
The orcs that lie here, broken, drowned
Or Saruman, his malice stayed,
In Isengard

*slips in*

This was *gorgeous*! Evocative and thunderous at once, like the memory of war drums.

i've been keeping this map open while i read the book; it's probably the first time i've truly understood everything that was going on in the "paths of the dead" chapter.
