minoanmiss: Baby in stand (Greek Baby)

I want a topic that is anything besides The News, so I grabbed this one.

The launch page at work is MSN, which is full of stuff that is bad for my soul, including all these tasty AITA articles. In this one, the LW's father's girlfriend threw an unwanted gender reveal party for her.

I searched "mom to be ruins her own gender reveal party" and that turned up a bunch of links to the same story. For the MSN one, the babble at the end appears to be critical

I do love me some idiots
I don't see any idiots here. The person who set up the party wasn't an idiot who didn't realize LW didn't like gender-reveal parties. She KNEW, because she had been told repeatedly. She went to considerable trouble, lying to multiple people, to do something that LW disliked. She thought that once it started, LW would have to endure it with a smile no matter how she felt. She felt hurt when LW "returned awkward to sender," which is kind of understandable. Counter-attacking and demanding apologies is wrong, but not stupid.

I wasn't actually calling the LW an idiot - it's just that reddit AITA posts often contain idiocy. and given I'd not read the article, I didn't have anything more info than the URL provided

frankly, I don't think LW was wrong at all, and am glad she stood her ground and "ruined" the unwanted party

Can you change the launch page, or get your IT department to give you a different one? "I find news emotionally distressing, so I'm trying to limit how much and what kind of news I consume" and "The possible emotional impact of a distressing news item could take me out of the headspace I need to be in for work" should be sufficient reason, if they want one. It's not an uncommon situation.

You should enlist your manager as an ally, then. I really think that using generic news pages as a launching page is a really bad idea. You are certainly not the only person who finds "news" distressing; this should have been obvious to everyone after 9/11, when news channels played footage of the destruction of the WTC around the clock.

I fucking hate the very concept of gender reveal parties. I'm sure I don't need to explain why.

I'm glad the mom-to-be resisted.

This is heartwarming content and I love it. Good for her for standing up for herself appropriately and not giving in to emotional manipulation.

Also the only “gender reveal” parties I will ever support are gender reveals that a trans person throws for themselves, or their family or friends throw for them with their blessing. The others are just sex-reveal parties based on baby genitals, which feels fucking weird to me. Like we’re literally going to have a party to celebrate whether there’s a penis or vulva on an infant?

Let’s not forget that gender reveal parties (of the pyrotechnical subgenre) have racked up a literal body count:
