The things WD does for my sake. *blows him a kiss*
Tonight WD and I watched Godzilla Minus One, a recent movie about Godzilla and the Japanese people and the immediate post-WWII era. It was really two movies. One was about how damaging war can be to the human psyche, how the Japanese War Effort abused the Japanese people, and the resilience of the human spirit. The other was about Godzilla fucking everything up most gloriously. I liked one of those movies; WD disliked both.
I really hope the writer was pleased with the result. They took the completely novel idea that war is terrible and the unprecedented claim that the WWII Japanese war effort squandered and maltreated the Japanese people, and wrapped these in Godzilla like a pill in a pill treat. OK, I'm being sarcastic, and I might have been more moved by those two ideas if their treatment in the movie hadn't felt so formulaic in that particular inexperienced-creator "my statement is both new and universal so all I have to do is say it" way. Scenes that should have tugged at my heartstrings made me say, "when will Godzilla show up again?"
At least Godzilla was glorious. There Goes Tokyo indeed.
Poor WD has added this movie to the tally of hours I owe him.

Date: 2024-06-25 09:49 am (UTC)You know, one of the many ways Chun Woo enriched my life was engaging me with the Godzillaverse.
Though I still can’t stick Son of Godzilla.
