I was thinking about my diet, as one does, both in spring and after
certain events, and about how few vegetables I'd been eating (storebought
salads don't appeal to me -- pale romaine and chickpeas for miles). I
combined two salads I read about on Serious Eats to make a Kale Potato
Fish Salad I really like (recipe to follow). I've been eating it topped
with sardines, for fish and more fish.

I've been meaning to write about this, but, life. And then I came across
this article which resonated with me, not in its details of course but in
its delight in sardines:

Farmer's Market season starts soon. Tender vegetables and tiny new
potatoes and sunshine, and several months' worth of recipes from reading
Serious Eats. Here's hoping I can eat better by all of my alimentary
tract.

Kale Potato Fish Salad

1 pound of the tiniest potatoes possible
1/2 pound kale, de-stemmed and torn up
3 tbsp. olive oil
4 oz smoked fish (I used salmon)
1/2 cup sour cream
1-2 oz chives or green onion, thinly sliced.
salt and pepper to taste

Put the potatoes to boil in well salted water. Meanwhile, de-stem the kale
if necessary, tear it up, and rub it with the olive oil. Cover and leave
at room temperature.

When the potatoes are tender, leave under running cold water for about 10
minutes to cool. Dice or flake the fish, and add all the ingredients to
the bowl with the kale. Stir well, taste, add lots of freshly ground
pepper and a little salt if necessary, and serve or pack up to
refrigerate. it keeps well.

I keep seeing small mesh bags of really tiny potatoes in Whole Foods. You can get all one variety (Yukon Gold, mostly), or a mixture of those with reddish-skinned Russet potatoes and the lovely purple-fleshed Peruvian kind. Tiny potatoes in general are called "creamers" - I don't know why (potatoes in cream sauce sounds horribly bland!).

I bought some teeny tiny potatoes last weekend and they were so delicious. Will have to give this recipe a try, thank you!

Talking of wee potatoes, the Jersey Royal season has just started here. Doesn't last long so we're making the most of it!

They may be called 'creamers' for their creamy texture and flavour I suspect.

Yup, sounds yummy, and even probably in range of my extremely limited culinary skills. The problem is that since I'm living alone, it would probably go bad before I could finish it :-(

or maybe I could make it for a potluck and just keep some at home. Hmmm...

It's certainly something, isn't it? Have you seen it before? ;)
