"Be kind to each other."

"Yep, that'll do it."

Who's going to tell them about the social mores attached to striking another person on the face in first century roman occupied Judea? Insofar that it's not meekness but aggressive covil disobedience?

(Note: I need to fact check this myself, as I can't remember the source where I picked it up off the top of my head)

It’s not about living. Not even the coffee mug version of scripture, now.

It’s about teams and triumph.

Well, I should be fairer.

There are three synoptic gospels that have a great deal to say about Jesus's teaching, which is so much in the tradition of the justice prophets who preceded him. There is one other gospel that emphasizes theology and sells Jesus as God. And there are a few passages in undisputed letters of Paul* in which his explanation of "what the hell was that, and why does it still seem to matter with Jesus dead?" was that through his death and resurrection those believing in him are also going to return from death.

Those guys ignore the three Synoptics entirely except in micro snippets. They don't pay a lot of attention to the gospel of John, except to explain how that Pauline theology could work out. And they're way into the Magic Resurrection Jesus.

So I don't think they ignore *all* scripture. Just the ethical teachings.

* For anyone reading this who hasn't followed scholarly biblical scholarship and may be thinking, "That Paul! He sucks so much!"-- one of the things I learned with pleasure in big old leftie seminary and, now that I read Koine, can independently concur with, is that 1 Tim, 2 Tim, and Titus are virtually surely not by historical Paul, while 2 Thessalonians, Colossians, and Ephesians are doubted by about 50% of scholars. (I think 2 Thessalonians probably was by Paul, FWIW.) The section of 1 Corinthians about women's hair is widely doubted, including by me. Hebrews is neither a letter nor by Paul.

Then, a bunch of stuff cited to condemn M-M romantic/sexual love is, well, dubious by translation and/or interpretation.

What seems unambiguous makes him look neurotic, sure, but definitely not misogynistic.

I’m curious : please ignore as desired.

Is your parents’ theology one emphasizing Magic Jesus Through Whose Blood We Believers Are Saved?

Of course following the teachings of Jesus is too hard for them, but it's wild to hear them admit it.

Have Evangelicals ever followed the teachings of Jesus? If so, it must have been before I was born.

The article indicates church leaders are horrified that their congregations think that Jesus's teachings are liberal talking points/weak/etc. I would feel bad for them, but...you cultivate a culture like that, you reap what you sow.

I was surprised because I thought they were better hypocrites than that, and more skilled at cognitive dissonance; but I guess they are not.

"Turning the other cheek and showing compassion for others is GAY SISSY STUFF." - actual Christians

It always feels surreal when I find myself defending Jesus, after the way I was raised, but these dickfaces are exactly the kind of people he meant when he said "not everyone who says Lord, Lord..."

The absence of a central doctrinal authority (of any doctrine, whether secular or religious) with the power to enforce its doctrines inevitably leads to heterodox interpretations of doctrine, also known as heresy.

See Americanism (heresy). The multiple ironies might amuse you.
