Grim sociopolitical thought.

I wish people would stop saying we live in the worst timeline. We live in a horrible timeline but it can get so very much worse. It will almost certainly get worse before it gets better but it can easily get worse in ways it can't recover from.

We live in horrifically interesting times and we need to keep fighting to keep it from getting worse.

That seems sensible to me rather than grim. The notion of the worst timeline abdicates all responsibility for healing it, or even just braking the fall.

People who think the USA is the worst it's ever been are not paying attention and do not understand our own history. We are on a downhill slide INTO something that's as bad as it's ever been but we are not there yet. We certainly have full potential to become something truly awful and possibly destroy civilization as we know it, but we still have time if we keep fighting.

For me, I see that we’re headed in a direction, back to some kinds of badness that used to be even more awful, but what makes it worse (to me) these days is that some of these bad turns can affect the planet’s climate in ways that are harder to fix even than human society. (Fracking, coal mining, etc etc etc). They’re two wholly different types of problems happening concurrently, so I’m having a very hard time keeping them distinct in my head.

It's bad, yes. And let's acknowledge that and all its weight. But it's not the worst. It's not the worst this timeline, this world, this country has ever seen, and it's not as bad as it could be. It could get worse. We could work to make it better.

A friend of mine got a new headmate visitor who originally lived 2000 years ago, and let me tell you, nothing gives a sense of perspective like explaining to this guy what a tomato is, what the moon is like, and The Whole Situation.

Said visitor seems dismayed, but not terribly shocked. To some extent, I think dickbags in power have been a historical universal.

Re; this not being the worst timeline: I am reminded of a post, tumblr, maybe, saying nevermind killing Hitler or keeping someone's favorite politician from getting killed, the best thing to do with a time machine would be to stop Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin from dying on the moon because of Soviet sabotage, thus avoiding the nuclear war that destroyed much of the planet.

Yeah. It's bad and it can definitely get worse, and we need to do what we can to avert that, and that's hard, but saying it's hopeless will only lead to it being so.
